Nearly everything that was right and wrong on the field last year remains in FIFA 16. That means slightly floaty shooting, fiddly tackling, lots of wing play and many an unspectacular tap-in dribbling over the line. Of course, it also means an incredibly solid passing game, with emphasis on satisfying buildup play and ferociously whipped in crosses. In other words, EA's chart-topping juggernaut still plays a cracking game of football... for the most part. Individuals players feel less distinct than in previous years. This restrictive new play style is mitigated to an extent by the wealth of game modes on offer, one of the best features of FIFA. The Ultimate Team option has been improved considerably with the introduction of a US football-style draft option, ideal for those who don’t have the time or patience to pore through the transfer market, while the career mode has undergone some beneficial tweaking, with pre-season tournaments replacing meaningless friendlies.

 

In the world of FIFA 16, this touch is part of a greater concept of players executing team defensive principles, with smarter players rotating over to guard players on the verge of running free, or interfering with passing lanes and angles to stifle a team's attack. EA's aim with all this is to regain "control of the midfield," a vital part of soccer that sometimes gets lost in the woods of highlight-reel plays and goals. The presentation in FIFA 16 has also been refined and will make you feel just a bit more involved in your career mode as the game is better at keeping storylines of player transfers and performances in play for longer. One of the best features of FIFA is the chance to create your dream team and include your favorite players in it. This particular system of the game is known as FIFA Ultimate Team or FUT.

 

This feature is hugely popular among the gamers and the game developers have been trying consistently to enrich it with new and new features. But in building your dream team, you have to face one really tough problem. The problem is earning and spending FIFA 16 coins. Buying or generating those coins is basically a nightmare for the gamers. First let’s get the obvious out of the way - FIFA 16’s visuals are simply stunning and famed superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero are virtually identical to their real-life counterparts, bar some awkward smiles. On the technical side of things, the Roles, Instructions and Tactics tabs are almost identical to that of FIFA 15 but still manage to serve their purpose well-enough. While most players will undoubtedly find themselves tinkering with sliders, the standard difficulty settings appear to have been adjusted since FIFA 15, whereby many fans felt that the jump from Professional to World Class was too far a stretch while Legendary was almost unplayable.

 

FIFA 16 has broken new ground with the addition of female national teams to the game. Despite the fact that the commentary can sometimes be construed as slightly condescending during the women’s matches, a kudos to EA is in order here. This is no small deal either. There are millions of young girls out there playing sports who look up to these female athletes. It’s nice that they can now play as them in FIFA 16. Let’s hope we see more of this from sports games in the future. Still, the comprehensive nature of the third patch update, combined with PES’ reported botching of their most recent patch release, mean that FIFA 16 may yet win out in the Christmas sales race.Personally, my biggest tip would be to try and become familiar with the game’s new dribbling controls as it has really revolutionised the gaming experience and will only develop in the next few releases.
