AI players in FIFA 15 will react to given situations much like they would in a real game

The graphical leap isn't as substantial as the one in Madden, but that's mainly due to the fact that FIFA was a great looking game to begin with. Madden has yet to match the sort of physical battles found in FIFA as players jostle for the ball, bump each other out of the way on set-pieces, and generally bully lesser opponents with their size and strength. The shooting is getting more nuanced, too. On that breakaway goal, Catfish was able to just barely slot the ball between the legs of the on-rushing goalkeeper-an impressively detailed bit of animation that made for an amazing looking goal. Player AI has also been bumped up to suit a more realistic on-field experience. With FIFA 15‘s new Emotional Intelligence system, AI players will react to given situations much like they would in a real game. They will complain to the ref if he misses a call, or they will play more aggressively after losing a tough challenge. Even some players will stop mid-stride, knowing full well they’ve earned the foul.

Building off that, team tactics will adapt to suit different scenarios, like becoming more aggressive when down one goal or cradling the ball when up. It’s a slight change that only becomes apparent at certain points in the game, but helps give each match an ebb and flow. So much so, that a natural tension sets in when injury time begins. That isn’t to say that players have become smarter across the board – there are still those head-scratching AI moments – but the players at least feel a little more like real human beings. Granted, some gamers will have gripes with the system, but it’s hard to deny it reinforces the realism. The concept of momentum is also apparent in the movement of your attacking players. If you’ve avoided a tackle, you might need a few yards to regain balance and alter course. That means that groups of defenders might close down your most skillful players and easily win the ball simply by harrying them into stumbling from one tackle to the next. But that creates space to exploit elsewhere on the pitch – just as in real football.

The player strength statistic changes tackling and running with the ball in quite significant ways. Go into a tackle with a player who is slight of frame against a player who’s no stranger to the weights bench and you’ll probably just bounce off him. You’ll likely fall over too. It doesn’t seem to matter how perfect your timing is in these instances, you’re always going to struggle to dispossess a very physically strong player with a very light, weak one. Even a well timed tackle that wins the ball might not ultimately be successful for you if your smaller statured defender happens to clip the strong attacker after the initial challenge – he’ll fall over or stumble off balance just as readily as if he’d missed the timing of the tackle completely. Tiny, fast players no longer have as unfair an advantage because of this – you’ll just need to play slightly differently with the varying types of player in possession.

Then there is the massively popular FUT 15 which is the trading card game of old integrated with the actual ability to play the game and compete against others. It’s massively addictive for some but is not something I have ever really been that into. Lastly you have the skill games, which you can attempt during loading screens, but which also form a core competitive side of the title as you strive to beat your friends’ scores. All four modes are perfectly polished and work excellently well. The online multiplayer will need a few months before the hardcore fans decide if it is well balanced or not, but for the average gamer you are going to love it.

A small improvement of fifa 15 that I really like is the overhaul of the team management section of the game. Where as in the past you have been fairly limited to pre-set formations, you now have the freedom to move players all around the pitch and really tweak your tactics and pre-set moves and set-pieces. For someone like myself, who from the safety of their own sofa thinks they could teach Sir Alex Ferguson a thing or two, this is a well over due addition to the game. At the end of the day, though, it’s hard to determine whether FIFA 15's key changes, or at least those on display for our E3 2014 demo, are enough to set it apart from the pack. The game certainly plays and looks better, but we’d have to see what modes are available and how the game evolves over time to better evaluate whether this is a must-buy for fans. For now, however, EA Sports appears to be on the right track.
