Diablo Immortal is on par with that of the core diablo titles

The reaction to Diablo Immortal’s announcement at BlizzCon 2018 was an embarrassment. Diablo fans had whipped themselves up into such a fervour believing a Diablo IV announcement was imminent that when Immortal was announced many behaved atrociously. Infamously, one fan asked Lead Designer Wyatt Cheng if the announcement was an out of season April Fool’s joke.

So, provided you guys do have phones, this could interest you. I have a phone, so I can tell you about Diablo Immortal from the time I've been able to have a hands-on during its alpha. Honestly, it's Diablo on a mobile device.

What is Diablo Immortal?
Diablo Immortal is set on a series of events that happened in between the timeline of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3. Accordingly narrates the “untold” story of the Diablo saga.

The story if the mobile game reads, “In Diablo Immortal, the fragments of the Worldstone corrupt the land, and demonic invaders pour into Sanctuary.”

Unlike the other games, Diablo Immortal takes a huge step into making it a bigger and more ambitious game because it is now a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that requires an internet connection. You are going to play with hundreds or even thousands of other players at the same time. This is a stark difference in comparison to the older Diablo games that may have been multiplayer games but was vastly limited in terms of how many players could play at the same time.

Unlike the previous games – which were designed for the PC and consoles – Diablo Immortal is played on mobile devices. It was designed to be played using touchscreen controls instead of relying on the usual mouse-and-keyboard controls for PC and controller on consoles.

What surprised me is that the action found here in Diablo Immortal is on par with that of the core diablo titles. Set between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, the direction has certainly been taken from the latter. Honestly, it wouldn't be a surprise if you came into this thinking it was just a mobile port of Diablo 3, with the usual mobile trappings added in.

Diablo Immortal’s alpha gave players access to four of the game’s six playable classes, however, I only played as the Barbarian. I fully intended to give every class a go but I was enjoying the Barbarian so much I forgot to swap before the alpha ended. Every night I’d get into bed with every intention of going to sleep, only to open Immortal and lose four or five hours in Sanctuary. It may be a mobile title, but it’s every bit a Diablo game as any of the others.

Will Diablo Immortal be free to play?
As to pricing, there is no news as to how Blizzard will be selling Diablo Immortal. What traditional fans are hoping for is a premium mobile game: a one-time payment with no additional in-game purchases or payments whatsoever to make the playing field equal.

However, considering how lucrative the mobile MMO market is when it comes to in-app purchases, it is more likely that Diablo Immortal will be a “free-to-play” game that will feature in-app purchases. Again, though, it is not known which route they are going.
