FIFA 17 Ultimate Team aficionados surely remember the glory days

You think more about the team than yourself. I know when I was young you want that glory, but once you get a gist of the game, it’s all about the team.” Notice that number next to a player when you select him or her anywhere from any game menu? That's their player rating. It's the single universal number that explains how good or bad a player is in FIFA 17 on a scale of 100. Obviously, those with a player rating closer to 100 are better. Longtime FIFA 17 Ultimate Team aficionados surely remember the glory days when the video game's weekly Teams of the Week would surface on social media.

Sometimes as much as eight hours before the special, limited-run in-game cards would be available in packs. With one of the most anticipated events of the FUT calendar, FIFA 17's Barclays Premier League Team of the Season (or TOTS). It’s not a bad game but it’s unquestionably the runner-up in this year’s title match. But that’s fine. That’s normally what it takes for a series like this to decide to pull its socks up and reshape itself from the ground up, instead of just tinkering around the edges of the problem. If EA now feel they have real competition then that’s only going to increase their efforts, and that can only be good for everyone.

Every year, EA applies a different weight and priority to the aforementioned factors. And every year, a rabid section of FIFA fans will always have a problem with the final rating granted to a player. Their fans won’t see it that way but it’s not good for any club to dominate for too long, and it’s just as unhealthy for any one video game to remain so untouchable that there’s no incentive for serious improvement. For the last several years FIFA has always been a good game but recently there’s been signs of complacency, that have come just as Pro Evolution Soccer has made its return to greatness. And this year there’s no question about it: FIFA is second best.

The second is FIFA Ultimate Team, which as the modern day equivalent of collecting Pannini stickers would probably sell the game no matter what it actually played like. The new FUT Draft feature is for those that don’t have the time or patience to construct their own team player by player, and instead gives you a random selection of star players to build your team from. You can alter the difficulty to earn more coins, which can then be ploughed back into building your own bespoke team, or you can just pay real money via microtransactions.

But the short version is that it features major improvements across the board – from the Master League to the controls – and has a headline innovation in its new physics engine. By comparison FIFA 17 has nothing very specific to shout about other than it now has women’s national teams, which is very welcome but does little to address the game’s legacy issues. In Ozil's case, he might not have had the best season but he's signed with Arsenal and his national team is Germany, both have a solid reputation. This is not all, he's on the younger side, and has won a lot in the last couple of years including the World Cup where he played an important role. All of these are why despite a perceived poor year, he still rates an 87, one point higher than last year's 86.

Oduro, an MLS veteran who’s played with seven different clubs over the last ten seasons, has always been known primarily for his superlative quickness and speed. In "FIFA 16," the Ghanaian is rated the sixth-fastest player in the entire game behind the likes of Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But physical attributes aside, he hasn’t been generally viewed as a technically gifted player, especially insofar as those important attacking qualities such as passing and finishing are concerned.
